Postcards from the Edge (1990)
Oh, Carrie Fisher. Thanks for writing a screenplay about the issues you have with your mother. Now the entire world knows you have problems.
Meryl Streep plays the Carrie Fisher character, and Shirley MacLaine plays the Debbie Reynolds character. With two incredibly tough actresses trying to share the big screen, it’s no wonder the chemistry of a strained mother-daughter relationship comes across naturally. If you want to see it for the acting, that’s a great reason and you’ll probably enjoy it. If you hate your mother as much as Carrie Fisher obviously does, you’ll also probably enjoy it. But if you’re looking for a likable, relatable protagonist, look elsewhere.
Streep’s character is a substance-addicted struggling actress who constantly feels the shade of her famous actress mother’s shadow. We are given a backstage view of how cruel Hollywood people can be, and how difficult it must have been to grow up with Debbie Reynolds as a mother. One can only hope Carrie Fisher got all her bitterness out of her system with this screenplay (which was based off her book of the same title) and after this cathartic experience, she’ll finally get her act together and become a more likable person.
As this movie is almost thirty years old, it’s obvious my hope didn’t come to fruition.
