Queen Bee (1955)
When Lucy Marlow gets invited to live with her older cousin, Joan Crawford, she’s very excited. After all, Joan is wealthy, well-known, classy, and gives a very charming first impression. The longer Lucy stays in her home, however, the more she begins to see Joan isn’t as well-liked as first thought. Joan’s husband Barry Sullivan keeps himself in an alcoholic stupor so he won’t have to deal with her, and Barry’s sister, Betsy Palmer hates her influence. Betsy is engaged to John Ireland, but Joan won’t let them marry.
This is such a classic Joan Crawford movie, so if you’re a fan of hers, you’ve got to see it. It’s as if Harriet Craig picked up the pieces and started up again in another movie! She’s fantastically manipulative, bursting into tears when necessary, extracting promises, and bestowing compliments when it serves her. She would have picked up another Rag nomination if it weren’t so similar to Harriet Craig, for which she was nominated.
Lucy is the perfect foil, innocent and trusting until she gets proved wrong. Betsy is beautiful and talented, and I’m always puzzled as to why she didn’t have a bigger career. And Barry is brooding and sexy as he buries his pain and anger. What’s not to love? This soapy movie is perfect for a matinee!
