Red-Headed Woman (1932)
If you’ve never seen a Jean Harlow movie, wait to rent Red-Headed Woman. I’d hate for your first impression of her to be as a scheming, heartless chiseler. Rent Hold Your Man or The Girl from Missouri first, fall in love with her heart of gold, and then come back to this one. She’s quite the villainess. Plus, you’ve got to see her as a blonde first. It just won’t do for you to go around thinking Jean Harlow is a redhead!
So famous for her platinum locks that the audience was undoubtedly shocked to see her new ’do, the opening sequence shows her at the beauty parlor dyeing her hair. “So gentlemen prefer blondes, do they?” she smirks, looking in the mirror at the finished product. In the same sequence, she buys a see-through dress and glues a photo of her boss to her garter. This is clearly a woman on a mission. If you want to skip this one, go right ahead. Jean Harlow is wonderfully sweet, and if you don’t want to taint your image of her, that’s fine. My mom really dislikes this movie, so feel free to stick with the nicer ones.
My fellow soap opera lovers, stick with me. This is so deliciously soapy, and incredibly shocking, since it was a pre-Code movie. I’ve seen thousands of old movies, and this is one of the nastiest I’ve seen. In addition to the see-through dress, and a nude scene where Jean and her friend Una Merkel change into their pajamas, as well as pretty daring love scenes and raunchy dialogue. Jean has her eye on her married boss, Chester Morris, and he resists as long as he can. Really, I don’t think anyone can blame him. Jean Harlow on her own is irresistible, but Jean intent on seduction is pretty unstoppable. Torn up by guilt, Chester is an emotional wreck, and in one scene, he explodes and beats Jean up. She’s locked him in her bedroom and refuses to give up the key, and even after he’s physically violent, she still doesn’t let him out. Instead, she lays down on the bed and tucks the key into her neckline. I’ve never seen an old movie with that fetish. It might be the nastiest scene I’ve seen in a pre-1959 movie.
How is the evil, scheming Jean going to get punished? Chester’s wealthy, disapproving father, Lewis Stone, steps up to the plate to try and buy Jean’s banishment. Since you know I never give spoilers, that’s not the end of the movie. You’ll have to rent it to find out what happens next. Sometimes it’s really fun to root for the bad girl, and I’ve never had as much fun as when it’s Jean Harlow.
