Reflections in a Golden Eye (1969)
I don’t know why this movie was even made. It was supposed to be shocking and daring and exposing, but it’s just disturbing and unnecessarily problematic. Montgomery Clift was supposed to have played the lead, but after he died, Marlon Brando took over. And since Brando was in the prime of his “I’m too cool to enunciate” phase, he didn’t make the movie any better. Although, I’m glad Monty wasn’t in it, especially since it would have been his last movie.
Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando are married, but they have an unsatisfying bedroom life, so she has an affair with their friend and neighbor, Brian Keith. Brando isn’t happy about it, but he does nothing to stop the affair. When Robert Forster randomly shows up and starts stalking Liz, Brando becomes attracted to him. Go ahead and read that again so you know how weird this movie is. Brian’s wife Julie Harris is even more messed up than any of the other characters, and when she recites her disturbing monologues to her servant, Zorro David, I kept wishing I had earplugs.
You don’t have to do yourself a favor by staying away from this movie, you can chalk it up as a favor for me. I’d be very happy if you didn’t watch this one. No one needs to be put through that.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. At the end of the movie, the camera jerks back and forth quite a few times, and that will make you sick. In other words, “Don’t Look, Mom!”
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to sexual content and an upsetting scene involving an animal, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
