Ride Lonesome (1959)
Remember The Bounty Hunter? Randolph Scott was so convincing as the title character, he won a Hot Toasty Rag nomination. I think he was very happy to get one, since they’re hard to come by, and he wanted to show his appreciation by playing another bounty hunter five years later. In Ride Lonesome, Scottie tracks down a criminal and tries to bring him back to town before the man’s brother can catch up with them and try to free him. Along the way, two other criminals accompany Scottie so that they can receive amnesty for turning in a wanted man.
Have you noticed that the women in Randolph Scott westerns were usually knockouts? Karen Steele’s figure, his costar in two 1959 movies, was actually distracting. There’s no way she would survive out in the Wild West on her own, but that’s where suspension of disbelief comes in. It’s no surprise that Pernell Roberts, James Coburn (in his film debut), and Scottie McScottie Pants show interest in the lonely woman.
There are a couple of twists and turns in the movie, but it’s not my favorite western. You’re better off sticking with The Bounty Hunter instead. It won the Rag award for Dramatic Screenplay!
