Roberta (1935)
The only reason I don’t watch Roberta over and over again is because it’s quite sad. Helen Westley is the titular fashion designer, and just as you’re getting really attached to her and think she’s going to be integral in the story, she dies. She asks Irene Dunne to sing her favorite song, and she falls into the deep sleep. It’s sad. In the remake of this movie, Lovely to Look At, the movie starts with the aunt’s character already dead. Much better.
Anyway, Randolph Scott is Helen’s nephew, and he inherits the fashion business. He doesn’t know what to do with ladies’ fashions, and he gets help from Irene Dunne, who’s a bit resentful of his taking charge when she was the one closest to Helen. Fred Astaire is Scottie’s pal along for the ride, and Ginger Rogers is Irene’s faux-European fashion assistant who thinks an accent will give her credibility.
“Lovely to Look At” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” are the big songs to come out of this one. The former is sung by Irene Dunne as she descends the staircase in a beautiful dress to Randolph Scott’s grin and open arms. The latter is played to one of Fred & Ginger’s most famous dance sequences. You’ve probably seen a clip in a montage of old movies. But if you haven’t, pop in this classic for another of their great pairings. You’ll also get to see the funny number “I Won’t Dance”, now a Frank Sinatra classic – but Fred sang it first!
