Robin and Marian (1976)
After a nine year hiatus from the big screen, Audrey Hepburn returned to Hollywood with a questionable choice: playing Maid Marian as a middle-aged woman. Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to make this movie? No one wants to see Robin Hood and Marian with wrinkles, knowing they didn’t ride off into the sunset decades ago. Isn’t that the point of all those legendary movies? Robin reinstates the rightful king and marries Marian.
Instead, in this middle-aged version, King John still takes over (played by Ian Holm), and Robin is still fighting in the Crusades. Maid Marian has become a nun – no, I’m not kidding. When Robin returns and tries to woo her one more time, she reminds him that she acted in the film The Nun’s Story in 1959 – wait, never mind. She’s still not very receptive to the idea, and Ian Holm isn’t too receptive to him coming back to the Sherwood Forest. It becomes another battle with the merry men (with Nicol Williamson playing Little John), against the sheriff of Nottingham (played by Robert Shaw). Richard Harris makes a cute cameo, as a favor to his real-life pal Sean Connery, briefly playing Richard the Lionheart. But this depressing film that seems to grow gray hair and a paunch right before your eyes, really isn’t worth watching – especially if you love the legend. Stick with Errol Flynn and end the movie with a smile on your face.
