Rollercoaster (1977)
In tandem with the 1970s disaster film craze, Rollercoaster boasts an all-star cast and a good setting to make audiences sit on the edge of their seat and wonder who is going to make it out alive. As you can guess from the title, it takes place at various amusement parks. The killer has tweaked the mechanics of the roller coasters so that if his demands aren’t met, those on the top fall to their deaths.
George Segal basically plays the same role he played in No Way to Treat a Lady, the frustrated policeman in charge of negotiations with the psychopath. You’ll also see Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, Timothy Bottoms, Susan Strasberg, Harry Guardino – and a very young Helen Hunt! Which one is the killer? You’ll have to watch this disaster movie to find out – but unless it really appeals to you, you can skip it. It’s not nearly the caliber of The Poseidon Adventure or The Towering Inferno. It’s more along the lines of Two Minute Warning and Golden Rendezvous.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. During the rollercoaster scenes, the camera’s POV goes loop-de-loop, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
