Romantic Comedy: Boy Meets Girl Meets Genre
by Tamar Jeffers McDonald
When you think of the romantic comedy genre, you don’t normally think of its subgenres, unless you’re a student or reading this book, of course. Tamar Jeffers McDonald gives an interesting analysis of the genre on the whole, as well as devoting sections to subcategories of sex comedies, screwball comedies, and others within the original genre.
I read this during my time as a film student, but it wasn’t required reading. It’s rather short—the meat of the book is around 100 pages—and is more of an introduction to this type of analysis and deconstruction of the romantic comedy genre, rather than the book of authority. If you’re thinking of dabbling in the world of film studies, this is a good book to start out with and see if you like that type of analysis.
