Ruby Gentry (1952)
This classic melodrama is sexy and steamy – literally. It takes place in the swamps of the Deep South, and who can pull off a hormone-raging Southerner better than Jennifer Jones? In this movie, she plays a low class girl who wears extremely tight clothes and drives every man in town crazy—except the one she wants. When she was young and poor, the wealthy Charlton Heston wanted her in the worst way, and she refused him. Years later, when she’s risen in the world, she thinks she’s enough of a lady to impress him. Instead, he still maintains that money doesn’t make a lady and she’s just as much of a tramp as she ever was. Ouch.
If you like either of the leads, definitely rent this movie. I’ve seen it three times, and it’s very entertaining. Heinz Roemheld's theme sounds like a cross between "The Tender Trap" and "The Best of Everything", but it puts you in the mood for a swampy romance. Jonesy is at her best with her hormones and emotions running rampant—and she looks incredible, too. Charlton is snobby and cold, yet desperately attracted to her. Add in Karl Malden as the “undesirable but nice” fellow and this Southern tale is complete!
