Run for the Sun (1956)
If you liked Six Days, Seven Nights and old movies, you’ve got to rent Run for the Sun. I’ve seen thousands of old movies, but I still hadn’t heard of Run for the Sun until it was Richard Widmark’s week on Hot Toasty Rag. It’s so entertaining! While it isn’t exactly like the Harrison Ford action romance, it does have some similar elements to it. Richard flies a plane, Jane Greer is a pampered journalist, they meet up in an exotic location and when their plane crashes, they’re at the mercy of bad guys on an island.
But I’m getting ahead of myself – although that should be enough to make you run out and find a copy. The movie starts out with Jane traveling to Mexico in search of the elusive author Richard who’s disappeared from society. She wants to write a magazine article about him, and she hides her true identity from him to butter him up and get him to share his secrets. Of course, she falls in love with him – but wait, where’s the plane crash I promised you? They get drunk one night and go for a quick flight (not smart), and get taken in by Trevor Howard (obviously a good guy – not!) when they make a crash landing.
I highly recommend this movie. It’s exciting, romantic, and features a different type of role for usual-villain Richard Widmark. To see him paired up with Jane again in their sunset years, rent Against All Odds, where they get to play husband and wife.
