Sandry's Book
by Tamora Pierce
Since my favorite books as a young girl were the Tamora Pierce “Alanna” and “Dane” series, it was an easy bet that I would try out any other series of hers I could get my hands on. Sandry’s Book is the first in the Circle of Magic series: a quartet about young misfit magicians in school who bond together.
Unfortunately, this introduction didn’t interest me enough to continue the series. I couldn’t get behind any of the characters, and the plotline of four kids who don’t fit in and therefore fit together wasn’t very interesting to me. (And no, I actually didn’t like the Harry Potter books as much as the rest of the world.) The four main characters have different specialties within their magic: fabrics, plants, metallurgy, and weather. Sandry’s talent lies with fabrics, which I didn’t think was particularly exciting. Perhaps if the series had started with the weather, I might have been more dedicated. But, to each his own, and if you like Tamora Pierce’s style, give it a shot.
