Santa Claus: The Movie (1985)
I’ll watch anything with Dudley Moore in it, and I was very intrigued to see an origin story of Santa Claus. The beginning with the centuries-old original Santa was original and interesting. David Hiddleston plays simple woodcutter to gives handmade toys to children on Christmas with his wife. When there’s a terrible snowstorm one year, some elves rescue them and bring them to the North Pole. Through the magic of the North Pole, the elves, Santa, and Mrs. Claus will live forever – and in my favorite part, Christmas Eve magically makes time “stand still” for as long as it takes Santa to go around the world to deliver presents. Finally, it makes sense!
Okay, now for the modern part. Centuries later, Santa’s tired and Dudley Moore gets hired as his assistant. Remember in Arthur when Liza Minnelli made fun of him by calling him “Santa’s little helper”? It wasn’t very nice, but now he finally lives up to the joke. Dudley’s ideas to help Santa backfire, and Christmas is threatened forever! Evil CEO John Lithgow might just take over and turn the holiday into a commercialism nightmare!
Except this is a light comedy, so you can be pretty sure Dudley and David save the day. You can try renting this one with the kids if you want them to see what an “old” movie looks like. The hairstyles and fashions will make them laugh, and they might recognize Dudley’s voice from Milo & Otis.
