Santa Fe Trail (1940)
Most Errol Flynn movies are good, but not all. If you don’t believe me, you haven’t seen Santa Fe Trail yet. He’s paired up with Olivia de Havilland again, but with the lousy script, hammy acting, inferior production values, and laughable background music, it’s clearly a B-picture.
Errol Flynn, Ronald Reagan, and Van Heflin are graduates of West Point in the years before the Civil War, and the first two part ways with the latter due to their political views. Van joins up with Raymond Massey, a preacher turned revolutionary, but Errol and Ron have bigger fish to fry. They both fall for Olivia, a rough-around-the-edges farmgirl with a shockingly undeveloped character who teases both into thinking they each have won her heart. I’m a sucker for eye candy, and this movie has plenty, but I won’t watch it again. Ronald Reagan plays George Custer, but They Died With Their Boots On is a much better biopic. You can find other movie sif you want to see Alan Hale, Guinn “Big Boy” Williams, William Lundigan, Henry O’Neill, or Ward Bond for a few minutes. I’ll stick with King’s Row if I want to drool over Ronald Reagan. And I’ll stick with pretty much any other Errol Flynn movie.
