Saratoga Trunk (1945)
Some people feed off their costars, and others are just great no matter who they’re bouncing off of. Gary Cooper seems to thrive off of Ingrid Bergman’s energy, so if you liked them together in For Whom the Bell Tolls you should check out Saratoga Trunk. They had an affair during the 1943 drama, and I wonder if part of the romantic frustration onscreen two years later was mirroring their offscreen rekindling or if Ingrid played hard to get to keep up the tension.
I love Ingrid in this movie. She’s beautiful in her dark curls and gorgeous 1870s costumes, and her intelligence, coyness, and romance make a delightful combination. She’s got a bad reputation in town, with terrible skeletons in her closet, so when she makes her mark in New Orleans, others in town shun her. She’s determined to make it big in high society, and when she meets the tall, handsome Texan Gary Cooper, she hopes he’ll have the money to help her achieve her goal. It turns out he’s just as poor and ambitious as she is, so although they have a fantastic time together, she can’t include Gary in any of her permanent plans.
If you’re a fan of either of the leads, or if you like revenge schemes, or period pieces with beautiful costumes, you’ll like this one. It has an off-beat edge to it, as Ingrid’s sidekicks include a black-faced Flora Robson as her Jamaican maid and Jerry Austin, a dwarf. Ingrid makes the movie, giving a constant push and pull, and making her costar seem more talented than he is. Of course, I would have preferred Randolph Scott in the role, but Gary’s as good as he can be.
