Second Chorus (1940)
Second Chorus really isn’t the best Fred Astaire movie out there. It isn’t his usual fare, full of ballroom, tap, and charm. Instead, there’s jazz and jitterbug. He and Burgess Meredith play trumpet players who enjoyed playing in their college band so much they’ve deliberately flunked their senior year seven years in a row so they can remain students. When Artie Shaw (the real guy) comes to town and has room for only one new trumpet player in his band, the pals turn on each other and try to sabotage each other’s chances.
Added into the mix is a girl: Paulette Goddard. She’s not a dancer or a singer, so it’s one of those Joan Fontaine moments where you wonder why she was even cast. Still, Fred wants and woos her. Is there anything sweeter than him singing, “I hope in your horoscope there is room for a dope who adores you. That’s what makes the only dream of my life come true. For the love of my life is you.” It’s a heartwarming song that’s a bit silly but perfect for the time period between the Great Depression and WWII. If you like a more modern style and swing bands, you can check this out. But those who like classic Fred, pop in Top Hat again.
