See No Evil (1971)
If you liked Wait Until Dark, check out Mia Farrow’s version in See No Evil. She’s a pretty, thin, British woman who has been recently blinded, and soon becomes terrorized by bad guys. Sound familiar? There’s one huge difference between the two movies: the style. Wait Until Dark is very stylized and feels like you’re watching a play. It’s over-the-top, but See No Evil is more on the subtle side. It has a more “indie” feel to it, and there are long passages of film without any dialogue at all – which is the opposite of “play-ish”.
Mia Farrow is very convincing as a blind woman. This doesn’t have anything to do with her acting, but her particular tone of voice makes her sound vulnerable, and it’s not hard to imagine while listening to her that she’s a bit confused. What does have to do with her acting is how she relied on her hearing rather than her eyesight. Many times, she tilts her head towards whoever is talking to her, and when someone approaches her unexpectedly, she doesn’t angle herself directly towards them. While this isn’t the best movie in the world, it is worth it if you want to see Mia Farrow’s acting. There are some creepy elements, so don’t be surprised to see some blood or a dead body. Next up, rent Reflections of Murder for a spooky marathon.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie will not be your friend. Most of this movie features an ‘active’ camera that follows the actors around or swerves without warning, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
