Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
In the ingenue phase of her career, Teresa Wright played some very cute roles. If you thought she was nice and sweet in The Little Foxes, check her out in Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt. She’s bored by her small town, and when her uncle, Joseph Cotten, comes for a visit, she’s convinced he’ll breathe a little life into the humdrum surroundings. She was actually named after him, so they have a very special bond. Her prediction comes true, for he’s charming, energetic, and sweeps the townspeople off their feet. But is he hiding something?
This is a Hitchcock movie, so he probably is. Usually I don’t like the master of suspense’s movies, as the pace is quite slow, but since this takes place in a small, sleepy town, it makes sense. I enjoyed this one and would recommend it if you like mysteries with a rural setting. There’s a huge supporting cast, including Henry Travers, Patricia Collinge, Macdonald Carey, Wallace Ford, and Hume Cronyn in his first movie. Everyone has their own little personalities, inviting the audience right into the family. If you need another reason to watch Shadow of a Doubt, Teresa Wright said this was her favorite movie of her career; since she teamed up twice more with Joseph Cotten, we can hope she enjoyed working with him. It was also the director’s favorite movie, too!
