Show Me
by Nick Pirog
In the fourth installment of the Thomas Prescott series (and I’ve just discovered there’s a fifth one!), the slightly somber premise doesn’t get in the way of the extremely fun and witty writing. Earlier in the series, we were introduced to a very sweet elderly character who also helped reveal some of the protagonist’s humanity. Prior to the start of Show Me, that character passed away, and the sarcastic, delightful Thomas Prescott travels to Missouri to claim his inheritance. Of course, the city slicker has all sorts of misadventures in the country trying to run a farm – and in his off-hours, he gets involved with several buxom young ladies!
I love reading Nick Pirog’s books. I already have the Henry Bins series ready to read. He has a way of making me smile and laugh out loud no matter what kind of day I’ve been having. He describes character flaws with clever accuracy, teeters on the fine line between offensiveness and hilarity, and writes such realistic situations, it’s as if you’re watching Candid Camera instead of reading a novel. If you haven’t read any of his books yet, check out the first few pages. If you don’t crack a smile, his sense of humor isn’t for you. If you’re laughing so loudly, you fear you might be bothering those around you, do what I did and get the boxed set. You’re going to love them.
