Snow Cake (2006)
In this heavy indie drama, Alan Rickman picks up a hitchhiker, Emily Hampshire. She’s a little quirky and direct, which is to be expected from a young girl hitchhiking and accepting a ride from an older man. As they bond through conversation, there’s a freak accident and Emily is killed. Alan continues on to the small town she was headed towards and braves the very difficult task of telling her mother what happened. Sigourney Weaver plays Emily’s mother, and since she’s autistic, she doesn’t have the reaction you’d expect when told her daughter has died. Alan stays in town to tries and help her understand the situation and atone for his guilt, and he finds a new perspective on life.
With such a dramatic premise, you wouldn’t think this movie would have any laughs in it, but my favorite scene is quite hilarious. Since it’s set in a small town and small towns love to gossip, Alan Rickman overhears some rumors about Carrie Ann Moss’s bedroom. He pursues her, and as it’s quite easy, he thinks his suspicions are correct. In the morning, he asks how much he should pay her. It’s very funny, and after the misunderstanding is cleared up, the audience is treated to a very sweet and touching romance.
Some of you might not want to sit through something so heavy and emotionally draining, but for those of you who do, you’ll end up watching a pretty good movie. Because of the limitations of her character, Sigourney isn’t given as much emotional material to act through, but Alan is allowed to show his grief, guilt, and sadness. It’s a very sad and realistic performance, so if you’re a fan of is, you’ll probably like this movie.
