So Goes My Love (1946)
At the start of So Goes My Love, Myrna Loy moves to New York City in search of a rich husband. She grew up on a farm and has worked hard her whole life; now she wants an easy life with plenty of security. Don Ameche lives next door, and he’s wary of the gold digger. He’s not rich, mind you, but he plans to be in the future. He’s a poor, eccentric, struggling inventor, and he makes it clear up front that she should cross him off her list of eligible bachelors. So goes the meet-cute of a classic bickering couple who start off not liking each other. So goes their love story. . .
If you like the string of inventor biopics old Hollywood produced, like the ones on Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, you can give this one a shot. It’s not particularly dramatic or tragic, but it was based on a true story. Either the Maxim family had a pretty good life, or Hollywood decided to sugarcoat it for the audience’s sake – in my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with a little good cheer. There’s nothing really wrong with this movie, but it’s also not the best you’ll ever see. Bobby Driscoll didn’t make too many movies, so if you like the child actor, you might want to see him playing the youngest member of the Maxim family.
