Somebody Else's Sky
by Jessica Hawkins
Keep your copy of Something in the Way handy, because Somebody Else’s Sky picks up right where it left off. I absolutely loved the slow pacing of the first book, exploring the slippery-slope of how a doomed romance could get out of hand even when you’re trying to prevent it. This book continues the perfect pacing, but there’s an insert of a love triangle that makes it both more interesting and more frustrating.
I was completely on Lake’s side during the first book. Tiffany was immature, self-centered, and silly. Lake and Manning truly had a connection, I thought. All of a sudden, in this book, Tiffany grows up. She visits Manning every single day in prison, and given her lifestyle and previous preoccupation of status and approval, that’s no small feat. It’s a great sign of devotion and maturity. Meanwhile, Manning notices the change in her and starts to develop romantic feelings. He still loves Lake, but feels he owes it to Tiffany to give back love and support of his own. He also notices he’s having a positive effect on her normally unruly behavior, whereas Lake seems to be devolving as a result of her attachment to him.
Since this love triangle has become so messy, I would advise Manning to leave both the girls and start fresh elsewhere. But this is part of a trilogy, so we all know he’s not going to do that! This is still interesting, and still ends on a cliffhanger, so I’m excited to find out what happens.
