Space Cowboys (2000)
At the time it was released, it was supposed to be funny to see four “geriatrics” rocket up to outer space in Space Cowboys. Clint Eastwood, James Garner, Tommy Lee Jones, and Donald Sutherland played former astronauts who were the only men still alive who could understand the archaic technology of the 1960s to help combat the current problem with a Russian satellite. Marcia Gay Harden and James Cromwell brought them back to NASA, made them go through the training program again, and then sent them up. But now, over twenty years later, what’s funnier is that three of the four old timers are still alive, well, and making movies. If you go back and rent it now, they don’t even look that old! No, they don’t look like 20-year-old bodybuilders, but they look like attractive middle-aged men in good shape.
If you like space movies, you might not be amused by the premise. If you like “old folks still got it” movies, it’ll be right up your alley. Sweet, funny, full of testosterone, and above all, it reinforces the old adage: they don’t make them like they used to. Personally, I like this movie way better than Apollo 13, but you pick for yourself.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. During the space training and spaceship scenes, there are some swirling camera movements, and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
