State & Main (2000)
If you like movies about movies that don’t really show it like it is, check out the cheesy comedy State & Main. It’s pretty watered down, and it goes for some easy laughs; but if it showed you how awful moviemaking really is, it wouldn’t be a comedy.
A movie set in New England goes to a small town in Vermont to film. Everything’s going to be fine, thinks producer David Paymer and director William H. Macy. But as soon as they arrive on location, everything goes wrong. The landmark mill they were planning to use for the film (titled The Old Mill) burned down decades ago, the screenwriter Philip Seymour Hoffman has writer’s block, the leading man Alec Baldwin has a penchant for underage girls, and the leading lady Sarah Jessica Parker refuses to do the nude scene in the film.
If you’re looking at this with a critical eye, or if you’ve been in the business, you won’t like it. It’s too sugar-coated, too neatly packaged, and too unrealistic. But if you just want to laugh at “those crazy Hollywood people”, you’ll probably laugh. And you’ll get to see Julia Stiles, Clark Gregg, Patti LuPone, Charles Durning, Rebecca Pidgeon, and John Krasinski in the supporting cast.
