Superman (1978)
Although it’s a classic story, perhaps there have been so many subsequent Superman film and television adaptations because it’s too painful to watch the original anymore. If you are able to put aside the intense sadness, or if your children are so young that they don’t know what happened to Christopher Reeve, this 1978 superhero movie is very cute. Over the top, because it’s supposed to be, and without an ounce of inappropriate darkness (like modern comic movies) this movie can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages. Sure, there is a bad guy, but Gene Hackman’s so funny! Who can forget his hilarious expression in reply to, “My mother lives in Hackensack!” Since the first four movies I saw of his were comedies, it’s just impossible for me to see him as a dramatic villain.
It’s always gives me a good feeling to see so many big stars gather together in one film. A profession full of large egos, when everyone takes a small part, you can pretend they’re glad to contribute to the “big picture” – so to speak. With Glenn Ford and Phyllis Thaxter as Ma and Pa Kent, Marlon Brando as Jor-El, Jackie Cooper making a comeback as a grown-up, Terence Stamp, Trevor Howard, Susannah York, Ned Beatty (who’s just as adorable as it gets as Hackman’s sidekick), Maria Schell, Valerie Perrine, Jeff East, and Harry Andrews, it’s like greeting guests at a surprise party! Plus, Margot Kidder is such an adorable Lois Lane, she’ll easily become your favorite of all the versions. Who else would have the guts to joke with Superman about her underwear?
With John Williams’s classic theme and the absolutely perfect Christopher Reeve soaring up to the sky, it’s easy to believe all things are possible and that the anger and unrest of the 1970s could quickly come to a close. The ’80s were just around the corner, and happiness and prosperity and “good greed” were a welcome change from the disruptive decade.
