Sweet Valley University #30: Beauty and the Beach
by Laurie John
Welcome back to the summer universe of Sweet Valley University, a coastal vacation where everyone has amnesia about everything that’s happened since the last summer vacation. As Jessica, Elizabeth, Winston, and Nina return to their lifeguard jobs on the beach, they’re hoping to pick up exactly where they left off last summer. As I learned from earlier books, don’t get too attached to these plot lines, because as soon as school starts, everyone gets amnesia again.
Jessica’s hoping to have a hot and heavy romance with Ben, Elizabeth thinks everything will be wonderful with head lifeguard Ryan, Winston is once again looking for a summer job, and Nina’s swearing off boys for the summer. Do you think anyone’s plans will go smoothly? The answer, of course, is no.
Ben has a new girlfriend and they’re both exceedingly and unnecessarily cruel to Jessica, Ryan is having some trouble battling his alcoholism, Winston’s his usual goofball self, and Nina gets swept off her feet by her dream man. Most of this book isn’t very good, since it’s pretty heartbreaking to see the Wakefield twins getting treated so badly without either one having any desire to stand up for herself. Nina’s plot line is interesting, though, so if you’ve always longed for more of her chapters, now is your chance. The cliffhanger is quite frustrating, and we can only hope that Elizabeth learns in later books that she can’t save every boy with emotional problems.
