Sweet Valley University #30.5: Killer at Sea
by Laurie John
This might be my favorite of the thriller editions so far, and since I just used that exact phrase to describe the previous thriller, Dead Before Dawn, you know this one’s going to be even better. As usual, the thriller editions of Sweet Valley University are thinly veiled movie plots, and while I was detailing the events of this book to one of my girlfriends, she said, “That sounds like Dead Calm!” So, if you liked Dead Calm, and want to read a version of it involving Jessica Wakefield and her boyfriend, you’ll love this volume.
Jessica and Nick are going on a much-needed vacation on his sailboat; with her midterms coming up and Nick’s policework running him to the ground, they’ve all but forgotten how to have a good time. They don’t exactly have a good time, though, since Nick’s bad mood lingers and Jessica’s far more interested in seducing her hunky boyfriend than learning about the boat in case of an emergency. This is Jessica—of course she thinks a little black dress is more important than learning how to operate the emergency radio. “When I’m through with him, he won’t know port from starboard,” she grins to herself as she dolls up for dinner.
A man stranded on a lifeboat asks for help, but letting him on board turns out to be a disastrous mistake. With a dead radio, an unsuspecting victim, and a storm brewing on the open sea, Jessica’s in for a very different trip than she’d originally planned for. Packing a dozen different nail polish colors doesn’t matter when you’re stranded on a little boat with a madman! I loved this book so much more than I thought, since I’m afraid of the water. But, putting myself in Jessica’s place, not knowing port from starboard, it was very fun, entertaining, and yes, thrilling.
