Sweet Valley University #40: Private Jessica
by Laurie John
In the tradition of Goldie Hawn’s Private Benjamin, Sweet Valley’s 40th book in the college series follows a dumb blonde fighting her way against an unreasonably tough drill sergeant in boot camp. Jessica Wakefield is far more interested in keeping her hair smooth amidst Florida’s humidity than completing the obstacle course or boxing. Speaking of boxing, there’s a bit of From Here to Eternity thrown in (just a bit, though) as Jessica gets challenged to a match in the ring.
Elizabeth’s challenges in the summer continue as she battles untalented divas, quirky playwrights, and a boyfriend who thinks his “stand by your woman” act deserves a big thank-you. They are both consenting adults, and with no parents around to act as chaperone, they definitely have the time and the place. Is this the book where Elizabeth finally goes all the way? You’ll have to read this very funny installment to find out. Yes, it is much funnier than the synopsis sounds. Just like with the previous book, I couldn’t stop laughing. And if you love their new summer adventures, there’s one more book to keep you entertained before they go back to school.
