Sweep in Peace
by Ilona Andrews
I liked the sequel Sweep in Peace far better than the first novel Clean Sweep. Set in the same magical inn that hosts vampires, werewolves, and other species, it picks up where the last book left off. The quirky innkeeper still searching for her missing parents is approached to host a massively important peace negotiation, and because she could use the money and prestige, she accepts even though it’s more than she can handle. But with a bit of advice from her savvy friends, and the lovely cooking from an emotional, hilarious chef, she takes it on.
The reason I preferred this book was the exchange of violence for innkeeping duties. The first book had several descriptions of gruesome attacks, but the second one had a far greater focus on the peace talks and group meetings. The detailed descriptions instead were of the inn itself, as the innkeeper used her magic to custom-design rooms according to each guest’s background and personal taste. If the entire book were just one re-decoration after another, I would have been perfectly happy. If you like humor, magic, fantasy, and the idea of a quirky inn that can look any way you want it to, check out this series.
