The Adventures of Tom Thumb and Thumbelina (2002)
If you loved the previous Tom Thumb and Thumbelina movies, you probably won’t fall in love with this 2002 version. The songs aren’t that great, and the story is simple. It feels like Elijah Wood is insulted that he was cast as another short literary character, and I couldn’t help picking up the vibe that Jennifer Love Hewitt only took the part because she wanted to keep singing.
However, if you want something to pop in as an hour-long babysitter for your kids, this is a good one. The little ones will be very entertained, and if you pop your head in every once in a while, it won’t hurt you.
Since I have no little kids, I watched it on my own because I really liked the 1994 Thumbelina. This one isn’t nearly as good, but it did have its little moments of cuteness. The Mole King certainly stole the show – and you’ll never guess who voiced him (even though I’ve seen the end credits, I still don’t really believe it). But you might recognize Jane Leeves, Jon Stewart, and Bebe Neuwirth, among others in the supporting cast.
DLM Warning: If you suffer from vertigo or dizzy spells, like my mom does, this movie might not be your friend. There are several tilts and canted angles , and that will make you sick. In other words, "Don't Look, Mom!"
