The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse (1938)
With exception to the final five minutes (and the ridiculous title), this crime drama starring Edward G. Robinson is very good. It’s very rare for Eddie G to pick a bad movie, though, so a high standard of excellence is to be expected. I’ve only seen him give one bad performance, and I’ve seen over fifty of his films.
In this very interesting story, a high-class, extremely intelligent doctor wants to conduct some research. He wants to know about the criminal mind and the effects of crime on the body. Does it affect the nervous system, blood pressure, etc.? So, he moonlights as a burglar, taking his vitals before and after each event. No one suspects him, of course, not even the police detective Donald Crisp.
However, when he gets identified by some rival burglars who work for a master mob boss, Claire Trevor, he deviates from his plan. He joins their ring as the anonymous and quirky “professor” who likes to take blood tests on the gang. Lead thief Humphrey Bogart (in a particularly slimy and evil role) can’t stand him, but Claire develops a crush on the new guy. It’s a pretty cute story with some tense moments, and with intelligence at the heart. Check it out if you like Eddie G (who doesn’t, really?) and want to see him playing someone highbrow instead of a gangster.
