The Banger Sisters (2002)
Goldie Hawn is fabulous – and I use that word sparingly. She’s beautiful, sexy, sassy, confident, delightful, and adorable. In The Banger Sisters, she plays a professional groupie all grown up. She still has the ratted-hair, tattoo, tight clothes, cigarette dangling from her lips, and rock music blaring in her car. She tends bar in a loud nightclub and loves her wild life. But when she gets fired, she goes on a road trip to look up her soul sister from decades earlier, assuming they can relive their glory days. She has no idea that Susan Sarandon has shed all semblance of her former life. Susan lives in the suburbs, dresses in beige pantsuits, has two kids and a golden retriever, and stands in the background supporting her wealthy husband. Goldie is shocked!
Obviously, when the two “banger sisters” reconnect, there will be some bickering, lessons learned, and sisterly love underneath it all. However, the subplot caught my attention far more. While on the road, Goldie runs out of gas and doesn’t have enough money to fill up her tank. Geoffrey Rush offers to pay if she’ll give him a ride.
Had the movie centered around Goldie and Geoffrey, I would have absolutely adored it. Their chemistry was sizzling, and their characters blended so well. Yes, they were an unlikely pair, but in real life, they probably would have been drawn to each other anyway. Goldie would need someone uptight so she could draw him out of his shell, and Geoffrey would need someone so “out there” to accept his eccentricities. The Susan-reunion part of the movie wasn’t perfect, but it was entertaining. Erika Christensen’s character started the movie with a drug overdose at her prom, and her reckless behavior was never explained or resolved. Susan’s role as a homemaker was quickly dismissed as trivial, even though raising children is extremely important and difficult. But, as a fun piece of trivia, Susan’s younger daughter in the film was played by her daughter in real life! If you haven’t seen this fun comedy yet, rent it for your next girls’ night. Goldie style is wonderful, and it’ll definitely inspire you to put some pizazz back in your life.
