The Barbarian (1933)
In a complete rip-off of The Sheik, down to the smallest detail, Ramon Navarro stars in The Barbarian. Myrna Loy plays the high society lady with a repressed naughty streak who visits Cairo with her fiancé. Ramon is a playboy who cons every tourist in town, and when he sets his sights on her, he refuses to take no for an answer. Seriously, folks, this movie promotes rape. There’s really no reason for anyone to watch it– even though this is the infamous “Myrna Loy naked in the bathtub” movie. The “romance” is sickening. Myrna repeatedly tells him to leave her alone, and he doesn’t. He actually sneaks into her bedroom in the morning, threatening to ruin her reputation by answering the door when her friends arrive.
Of course, the point of this story is that Ramon’s horrifying behavior is the right thing to do. Myrna doesn’t know herself at all, or at least she does but she’s repressing her desires. Once she gets over her prudish European sentiments, she can embrace the wild, savage foreigner who’s harassing her. The only reason I watched this movie to its conclusion was because I had to find out if Ramon’s character would get punished or scolded in some way. While I won’t tell you exactly what happens in the end, if you’re hoping for a bit of justice, you’re better off not watching this movie at all. It’s quite offensive, and I’m not even a modern feminist. Those ladies will probably have a fit if they watch this movie.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to offensive and violent sexual content, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
