The Big Wedding (2013)
There are worse things than being typecast as a beautiful, innocent bride. In another familial comedy, Amanda Seyfried plays the blushing babe in white. She’s all set to marry Ben Barnes, the adopted son of Diane Keaton and Robert De Niro. Ben’s biological mother, from Colombia, has been invited to the wedding and even though she’s the newcomer to the bunch and shouldn’t really be catered to, Ben puts his family through a terrible ordeal in order to please her. He asks his divorced and squabbling parents to pretend to be a happily married couple for the wedding. Not only do they hate the idea, but so does Susan Sarandon, Bobby’s girlfriend! Ben’s siblings, Topher Grace and Katherine Heigl, have struggles of their own, and everyone feels the strain of containing the lie.
Of course, this is supposed to be a comedy, but as a quote once said, “The longer and more carefully you look at a funny story, the sadder it becomes.” In reality, turning what should be the happiest day of your life into a stressful performance to cover up a lie, is not funny. But in Hollywood, with a large cast all crowding into the promotional poster, it’s considered a comedy. Check out the preview; if you’re laughing, you’ll probably like the end result.
