The Blue Angel (1930)
The Blue Angel is a total classic; even if you haven’t seen it, you’ve probably heard of it. The plot is simple, yet timeless. A stuffy professor, unpopular with his students and thought too rigid by his colleagues, falls in love with a nightclub floozie. She unravels his life and ruins him, so if you’re not up for a very depressing movie, pick something else tonight.
In the original, Marlene Dietrich stars as Lola and sings her signature tune, “Falling in Love Again.” Emil Jannings is the pitiful professor, and he gives a heartbreaking performance. In the 1959 remake, Curd Jurgens and May Britt update the movie with a more modern acting style but they still keep their predecessors in mind. May’s Marlene impression is fantastic, and Curd’s subtleties add depth to Emil’s basic structure. Both versions are very good, so pick which cast and time period you think you’ll like and start there. The original definitely has the feeling of an early talkie, so if you’re not used to that stylized way of acting, you might want to watch the remake first.
