The Blue Castle
by L.M. Montgomery
I’ve never read Anne of Green Gables, so my first introduction to L.M. Montgomery’s writing was in The Blue Castle, a charming novel meant for adults. In this book, a sheltered woman nearing thirty gets a terrible diagnosis at the doctor’s office and decides to make more of her life. She throws caution to the wind, says goodbye to her overbearing family, and vows to do everything she wants to do before she dies.
This is such a sweet, heartwarming book that cheers you up despite the morbid subject matter. The protagonist is inspiring and likable, and you want her to succeed on every page. What surprised me was the realism and lifelike descriptions of the family members. Within the first few pages, I felt as though I truly knew them and had lived among them! For a bit of whimsy on a rainy afternoon, pick up The Blue Castle and get ready to smile.
