The Broadway Melody of 1940 (1940)
If you watch old movies, you know Fred Astaire is the greatest male dancer of the silver screen. You probably also know that Eleanor Powell is the greatest female dancer, and you might have wondered why they weren’t paired together for nine movies. If you do want to see them together, you have one chance to do it: Broadway Melody of 1940. Storywise, it’s not the greatest movie either one of them have made, which is a bit of a disappointment since it was such an opportunity to make the greatest dance movie of all time with the two greatest dancers. Then again, no one’s going to go see it for the story!
Fred and George Murphy are a dance duo whose friendship is threatened when a woman gets in the way. Frank Morgan is Ellie’s producer, and when he sees the boys dancing in a nightclub, he wants to poach one of them to be Ellie’s new dance partner to launch her Broadway career. That’s got to hurt George’s feelings, since the desired one is Fred, but due to a misunderstanding, their names get switched and George gets signed up to dance with Ellie instead. That still has to hurt his feelings since the movie is basically announcing to the audience that he’s not a good enough dancer to keep up with Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell—even though he does throughout the movie. See what I mean about the weak story?
Anyway, since you’re not watching it for the story, you’ll get to see some incredible dancing. Ellie’s nickname was “machine gun legs” and you’ll understand why as she tap dances around the most elegant dancer in history. If you’re a dance fan, you’ll love watching the incredible talents on the screen. All three of them!
