The Cat's Meow (2001)
Although there is a dark twist later on in the film, The Cat’s Meow is a pretty upbeat flick. It takes place during a weekend yacht party hosted by William Randolph Hearst (played by Edward Herrmann) and his mistress Marion Davies (Kirsten Dunst). There are famous friends aboard, like Charlie Chaplin (Eddie Izzard) and Louella Parsons (Jennifer Tilly), as well as regular folk. But everyone has a grand time, drinking champagne, dancing the Charleston, and wearing adorable flapper dresses.
Helmed by Peter Bogdanovich, a well-known lover of yesteryear and the silver screen, this is a very sweet tribute to the era. It’s cute, it’s light, and it definitely puts you in the party mood of the Roaring Twenties. With over a dozen period songs, the movie really feels like one giant party. Yes, something does go wrong, but even at the best parties, there is sometimes a minor glitch. Pop in this fun, frisky comedy when your own party is nearing the wee hours of the morning and your guests just want to chill in front of the television.
