The Christmas Contract (2018)
There have been so many “fake boyfriend” stories through the decades, and they’re always a particularly charming romance for the female audience. It skips the dating process entirely, instead selecting one reliable man (otherwise he wouldn’t agree to be the fake boyfriend in the first place) whose job is to literally dote on the heroine and pretend to be in love with her so she can show off to her family and friends. And, of course, he actually falls in love with her (and her family and friends) in the process. For women who have been burned in the past or just don’t feel like kissing a lot of frogs, this makes the ideal romantic movie night.
If you love those stories, check out the Lifetime movie The Christmas Contract. It’s one of the best “fake boyfriend” movies I’ve ever seen. The corniness is kept at a minimum, and the two love interests actually get to know each other. In some comedies like Picture Perfect, the entire setup is a lie and they don’t ever find out their real personalities. In this one, Robert Buckley and Hilarie Burton stay up all night talking about things that matter. He surprises her by remembering details from years ago, and when he opens up to her family, he’s not trying to impress them; he’s simply showing them who he is. Of course there’s conflict, but it’s not the end of the world and no one does anything unforgiveable.
For a sweet, realistic romance with a perfect man who doesn’t exist in real life (sorry to break it to you, ladies, but no one as cute as Robert Buckley would be that sweet and single), rent The Christmas Contract this holiday season. It has an unusual setting of Louisiana, and you’ll get to see a lot of local scenery, too. If you watched One Tree Hill, you’ll get a kick out of seeing so many of the cast members back together again.
