The Citadel (1938)
When Robert Donat earns his medical degree, he’s very excited about making a difference in the world. He’s one of those “young doctors” who actually want to help people; remember them? He gets assigned to a small mining town in Wales, where he means to study the tuberculous problem. However, his enthusiasm is tamped down at every turn. No one wants him to research and actually cure or prevent anything. They just want him to be the country doctor people come to after they’re seriously ill. The Citadel is basically a good story, based off the solid work of A.J. Cronin, but I would have liked it a lot better if a different actor had taken over for Donat. Ronald Colman could have done it in his sleep, or also Laurence Olivier.
One of the reasons to watch it, though, is to catch an early role of Rosalind Russell’s. She plays the devoted, long-suffering wife to Donat who believes in his research as much as she believes in him. You’ll also see Ralph Richardson, Rex Harrison, Emlyn Williams and Cecil Parker. If you like this movie, you can check out Dr. Ehrlich’s Magic Bullet, the true story of the doctor who found the cure to syphilis.
