The Day of the Dolphin (1973)
Somehow, I thought The Day of the Dolphin was going to be cute, like Flipper or Benji. The premise involved talking dolphins, so why wouldn’t it be family friendly, right? Unfortunately not, so don’t even think about gathering the little kiddies around if you rent this movie. While scientists George C. Scott and his wife Trish Van Devere have discovered a novel communication system involving dolphins, the cuteness quickly disintegrates when creepy bad guys want his talking dolphins for nefarious purposes. How wonderful would it have been if the whole movie involved George petting and talking to his dolphins, and hearing them say, “I love you,” in their little dolphin voices?
As an animal lover, I did not think this movie was wonderful. I loved the first half hour. But since this movie was made in the 1970s, with the “question authority” mantra, anger, and endless protests, I should have guessed that upsetting content would have ruined the sweet story. The dolphins completely tug on your heart, and George and Trish have genuine affection for them. But when the shady characters come onto his island, claiming to just be “interested” in the dolphins, it turns into a pretty upsetting film. And why does Paul Sorvino have to play a bad guy all the time? He can be very lovable and sweet when given the chance. I wouldn’t really recommend this movie, especially if you love animals. At one point, it was so upsetting, I walked out of the room.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to upsetting content involving animals, I wouldn't let my kids watch it.
