The Devil and Miss Jones (1941)
Even though you’ll see a publicity poster for The Devil and Miss Jones of Jean Arthur and Robert Cummings canoodling in their swimsuits, that’s not what the story is about. Jean and Bob work at a department store but the sparks have yet to fly. When the owner of the store, Charles “Piggy” Coburn, decides to go under cover and work as a lowly employee, he gets to know the two kids. As a business tycoon, Piggy has opinions about everything, but he has to rein it in, lest he get fired and ruin his experiment. This is a pretty cute comedy that earned Piggy an Oscar nomination (though in the wrong category, as he is the lead in this movie).
The other quirky employees in the store are Edmund Gwenn, Spring Byington, and S.Z. Sakall. They have their side stories and unique additions to the cozy atmosphere of the store, and Piggy learns a great deal about business. He knows all about numbers and sales, but they have the market cornered on friendship and human relationships. Naturally, he ends up playing Cupid with Jean and Bob, but the winged cherub has another arrow in his quiver. Spring Byington isn’t her normal ditzy self, but instead plays a sweet, interesting love interest who just happens to be middle-aged. If you like their chemistry together, check out the adorable romance Louisa, where both Piggy and Edmund Gwenn vie for her affection.
