The Distinguished Gentleman (1992)
Usually, political comedies are very entertaining. They manage to balance tongue-in-cheek humor with cynicism, and they don’t leave you with a “the world is ending” feeling when the credits roll. For a fun ’90s take on the grand American system that never changes, rent The Distinguished Gentleman.
Eddie Murphy runs an unexpectedly successful congressional campaign, even though he has no political experience or know-how, and he thinks he’s just won a ticket to Easy Street. When he arrives at the capital, he gets the usual lobbyists and offers to vote for or against a certain bill for financial compensation. Everything’s going according to plan, right? Well, for a sea of “distinguished gentlemen” in Congress, there are astonishingly few consciences among the bunch. When Eddie starts to actual read the papers presented on his desk, and actually pays attention to the consequences of voting ‘aye’ or ‘nay’, he learns that a career in politics should be more than fancy vacations and under-the-table bribes. This satire will absolutely have you laughing, but it’s also a little sad that in thirty years, nothing has changed. Costars Lane Smith, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Joe Don Baker, Victoria Rowell, Kevin McCarthy, and James Garner.
