The Eddy Duchin Story (1956)
I rented The Eddy Duchin Story because I like Kim Novak, but my goodness, was it lousy! It’s a biopic about Eddy Duchin, played by Tyrone Power, a talented and struggling musician. He falls in love with Kim Novak and she helps get him a piano playing job in a swanky nightclub. As his career grows, the movie follows his life and difficult marriage to Kim. I tried to cut her slack because she’s so beautiful and I generally like her movies, but her part in this movie was just horrible. Annoying at best, I remember telling the television, “If she has one more fit, I’m leaving!”. She had another fit, but I wanted to respect the filmmakers and finish the movie. It was an incredibly long two hours.
Unless you really love musical biopics and don’t mind bad marriages with no reason and very annoying characters, you will probably want to skip this one. The 1950s produced many films in this genre, so you have plenty to choose from. Try The Glenn Miller Story, With a Song in My Heart, Love Me or Leave Me, I’ll See You in My Dreams, Interrupted Melody, or countless others.
