The Elephant to Hollywood
by Michael Caine
Anyone who loves Michael Caine even half as much as I do needs to pick up one of his two autobiographies, What’s It All About and The Elephant to Hollywood. I haven’t read his first one, but his second memoir was so delightful and informative, I can’t wait to read more of his life story.
Everything you ever thought about Michael Caine turns out to be true when you read his book. It’s written in a very conversational tone, as if you had him over for tea and he started talking. He’s funny, charming, sharp, humble, romantic, sweet, and likable. He provides a wonderful blend of the backgrounds of well-known stories, such as how he chose a stage name, to unknown details of his life, such as how he met his wife. I learned so much about his extremely colorful life that I can’t imagine what was left out due to its inclusion in his first book—but I’m excited to find out.
He’s friends with so many celebrities, you’ll have a buffet of name-dropping, entertaining anecdotes to feast upon. Whether you first fell in love with him in Alfie, Hannah and Her Sisters, or The Muppet Christmas Carol, you’ll get instantly absorbed in his story and root for him to succeed in all he desires, whether it’s to get the part, the girl, or the Oscar. This is a fantastic autobiography, one to display proudly on your shelf.
