The Emperor's Club (2002)
In The Emperor’s Club, Kevin Kline stars as a beloved, respected history professor at a prestigious boys’ academy. He makes his lectures come to life, encourages academic growth, and moderates the yearly student competition to determine which boy holds the most knowledge of the early Romans. When a new student, Emile Hirsch, joins the class and with an equally bad attitude and influence over the other students, Kevin gets tested in ways he never dreamed.
Since this movie is about a teacher with an obvious passion for his students and his subject, it’s understandable that Kevin won’t just wash his hands of the one bad apple in the class. He believes if Emile applies himself, he could be just as bright as his fellow students, Jesse Eisenberg, Rishi Mehta, and Paul Dano. Kevin tries to help his troubled student, but his life becomes just as influenced by their relationship.
I highly recommend this drama. Many films showcase either the academic or personal side of a professor’s life, but this movie balances both. Kevin is a man, and an imperfect one. The audience sees his great struggle and undoubtedly struggle themselves as they wonder what choice they would make if put in the same situation. I haven’t yet seen Dead Poet’s Society, but I believe this movie has a different purpose. It’s very realistic, and I enjoyed seeing it all play out.
