The Enemy Below (1957)
I think I’ve figured out why Hollywood makes so many war movies: men are glad to watch a macho story, and women are glad to stare at the men in uniform. If that’s not the reason, I’m at a loss.
The Enemy Below reminded me of The Best of Enemies and The Scarlet and the Black; it’s a story about two rival captains who hate each other since they’re on opposite sides of the war, but they come to respect each other’s tactics. Robert Mitchum heads up the American submarine, and Curt Jurgens leads the German ship. Directed by Dick Powell, this lush DeLuxe Color splendor showcases the scenery—and the water, too—and keeps audiences interested with Leigh Harline’s exciting score. I like these types of movies because they explore the humanity behind the soldiers. If you like either of the leads, or navy films, or if you like seeing Robert Mitchum balance a softer side with authoritative behavior, or if you just like drooling over Robert Mitchum, give this one a chance. Hollywood was just introducing the European star, also in the same year’s Bitter Victory. You can pretend he’s wearing a different uniform and drool over him, too!
