The Farmer's Daughter (1947)
In what might be the only time I found Loretta Young to be cute, she won an Oscar for The Farmer’s Daughter. However, lots of actresses were cute in lots of movies – why give her an Academy Award for it? Like Marty, just pretend that she didn’t win an Oscar for it and enjoy the cute little comedy.
Loretta wants to become a nurse, but when she gets robbed of her money and her reputation, she has to start from scratch. She gets a job as a maid working for a powerful, political family, and she changes everyone’s lives. Ethel Barrymore is the wise matriarch who notices everything, including her son Joseph Cotten’s growing crush on Loretta. He splurges for new uniforms for her, ice skates with her in the morning, and drinks her homemade glogg. Everyone in the house finds Loretta’s Swedish country charm refreshing, and they also think she has an interesting perspective when she learns about American politics. If you liked Born Yesterday, you’ll love this one.
Charles Bickford is very charming in his butler role, as his no-nonsense gruff exterior gives way to a funny, soft interior. He and Ethel have a classic bet that’s been oft repeated in cinematic jokes, and when he shouts, “Fish for sale!” at a political rally, it cracks me up. You can also try out Tammy and the Bachelor if you like the storyline of a small country girl learning about the big city through a kind, wealthy family.
