The Flame and the Arrow (1950)
With movies like The Flame and the Arrow and The Crimson Pirate early in his career, Hollywood was clearly trying to turn Burt Lancaster into the next Errol Flynn. What energy! What stunts! What a smile! What a body! And then, for some reason, he wanted to show he could actually act; he insisted against typecasting and took roles like Come Back, Little Sheba and Sweet Smell of Success. The good news is that us girls can rent his cuter movies and watch them as many times as we want to. In this one, he plays a Robin Hood type, and channeling Errol’s irresistible charm and vigor, he makes every woman fall at his feet – in the movie, too! His son adores him, the village protects him, and the women all want him. When he meets the headstrong Virginia Mayo, will she be enticing enough to make him settle down?
Yes, this movie has lesser production values than The Court Jester, and the acting of everyone besides Burt is downright atrocious, but if you love watching him grin and bear it all, you’ll probably want to watch all his adventure flicks. He and his frequent costar and pal Nick Cravat team up for some incredible stunt work. They play with fire, tumble from each other’s shoulders, swing from ropes, and scale castle walls as if it’s nothing at all. For the former acrobatic team, it probably was easy, but for the audience, it’s awe-inspiring. I don’t blame you if you’re tempted to turn this one off, since it is pretty bad, but at least watch him in The Crimson Pirate or His Majesty O’Keefe.
