The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973)
In The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Robert Mitchum decides to sell out his criminal friends in order to avoid going to prison for illegal arms smuggling. He continues to pretend to sell guns, but when the interested parties show up, Richard Jordan is there with his team of federal agents. Bob doesn’t know Peter Boyle is also working as an informant for Richard. Needless to say, the plot gets a little confusing as good guys pretend to be bad guys, people go behind each other’s backs, and the audience gets to know things the characters don’t—that is, if they can follow it.
I love how fantastic Robert Mitchum is with accents. Want to see him as an Australian? Rent The Sundowners. Irish? Ryan’s Daughter. Cockney? Secret Ceremony. Southern? Home from the Hill. And, if you want to see him as a good ol’ Boston gangster, watch a scene or two from The Friends of Eddie Coyle. He’s very believable as a tough, old-school gangster whose past behavior has finally caught up with him. He’s crass, uses bad language, and doesn’t care who knows it. Usually the top of the heap stays at the top, but in this movie, he’s fighting for his life.
Basically, if you like 1970s crime movies, or if you’re dying to see Robert Mitchum acting like the cad you think he is, you can rent this one. If you actually know anything about his personal life and you don’t like typical 1970s gritty flicks, stay away. I wasn’t really happy I saw it.
Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to language and violence, I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.
